Our Summer Enrichment Program provides students fun and exciting themes while our HPMS teachers support students in their math, reading and writing skills.
2018 Early Childhood Summer Enrichment Program
- Week 1 & 2: Traditions Around the World (6/25-7/6, School Closed on Wednesday, 7/4)
Join us as we kick off our Summer Enrichment Program with a deep exploration of cultures and traditions from around the world. Students will study the differences and similarities among a variety of cultures, with an emphasis on those most present in our community. We will celebrate through presentations, art projects, music, and concerts. We also invite families to come in and share which holidays are most important to them. We will cap it off with a school-wide 4th of July celebration that will include a picnic and outdoor games!
- Week 3 & 4: Let’s Launch into Space! (7/9-7/20)
What is a galaxy? Why can’t we live on Mars? Let’s find out! During this two-week exploration, our young scientists will have a chance to learn about the entire solar system: the sun, the planets, Earth’s moon, and more! They will learn why Earth is different from the other planets, and will also learn how the other planets stand out in their own ways. Students will then be able to see the stars and the planets up close in a visit to a local planetarium.
- Week 5 & 6: Crawling Critters (7/23-8/3)
After studying the galaxies, students will turn their attention to the tiniest of organisms: insects! They will learn the answers to questions such as: What is the difference between a butterfly and a moth? Why do some insects have over 500 legs and others have none at all? What do insects do? Students will learn why insects are vital to us and to our general environment by helping us to grow food, pollinate flowers, and more. Students will even be able to observe a real beehive, participate in a field trip and enjoy in-house activities that allow them to see a variety of insects up close.
- Week 7 & 8: Under the Sea (8/6-8/17)
Just look at the world around you, right here on the ocean floor! Such wonderful things surround you, what more are you looking for? Take a dive with us and discover the wonders of the ocean! Through a variety of activities and science projects, students will learn about sharks, fish, dolphins, whales, and other incredible animals that dominate our oceans. They will also delve into the various plants and coral reefs that are vital to ocean life. Now imagine students’ faces when they are able to see all of this up-close on our field trip to the aquarium! We cannot wait!
2018 Elementary Summer Enrichment Program
- Week 1 & 2: Words, Words, Words! (6/25-7/6, School Closed on Wednesday, 7/4)
The gift of reading is something that should be cherished forever. During this twoweek theme, students will not only be able to practice their reading skills, but will explore the fun that reading a good book can bring. In our Reader’s Theater program, students will expand upon one chapter of the timeless classic, Charlotte’s Web. They will create a small re-enactment of the chosen chapter in order to gain a deeper understanding of the book. They will also delve into the world of theater by seeing a local production.
- Week 3 & 4: To Infinity…and Beyond! (7/9-7/20)
During this session students will learn all about rockets and how they can propel us to new frontiers. They will investigate how rockets are made and conduct experiments to gain a deeper understanding. The fun will continue when students touch down on another planet and learn what it takes to build their own colony. Students will then be able to see the stars and the planets up close in a visit to a local planetarium.
- Weeks 5 & 6: Fab Lab: Let’s Build! (7/23-8/3)
Have you ever looked across the Hudson River and marveled at the magnitude of the skyscrapers? Have you ever wondered how they were built, and what makes each one unique? In this two-week theme, students will explore the marvelous architecture that is right across the river from us. They will visit Manhattan to explore some of New York’s skyscrapers up-close, learn about their importance, and study how they were built. They will then design and create their own miniature skyscrapers, thinking about their usefulness as well as how and where they would fit into a skyline.
- Weeks 7 & 8: Minecraft Mania! (8/6-8/17)
In this summer session we’ll use Minecraft to explore cause and effect by building a Digital Rube Goldberg Machine! After introducing students to the basic elements of Minecraft, we’ll dive into red stone, pressure plates, pistons and more to create a spectacular unfolding of cause and effect. This class creates a foundation for computational thinking, problem solving and collaboration. Through critical thinking & creativity, students will spend our two-week session building & creating something amazing together!
